WELLINGTON is getting ready for its official lights switch-on.

On Saturday, December 3, the High Street will be closed to traffic from 4pm to prepare for the big event.

When it gets under way, Father Christmas will be arriving to take his place in the grotto, escorted by the Wellington Majorettes.

After the majorettes give their Christmas-themed display, the Wellington Pantomime Society will be providing music and entertainment.

Greg Dyke, town clerk, said: “The Christmas message this year will be given by pupils of Beech Grove as well and will herald the start of the Christmas sheep competition organised by Churches Together.

“The Celebration of Light in the Quaker Meeting House will begin during the evening with the lighting of candles in peace garden.

“New this year will be a double decker playbus which is being provided free of charge for all the children.”

Langford Lakes has provided a Christmas tree to decorate the town centre and the choir of Beech Grove School will be leading the carol singing around the tree.

The lights will be switched on at 6pm by the town mayor, Councillor Bob Bowrah, assisted by two pupils from Rockwell Green School.
