CROWDS have once again been flocking to enjoy Bridgwater Fair this week.

The largest travelling funfair in the South West has occupied Bridgwater's St Matthews Field on its annual visit to the town.

This year Bridgwater Fair and the West Street market will be open through to Saturday.

In addition to organising the two markets Sedgemoor District Council also funds public conveniences, first aid, night-time security and generators as well as inspecting the many food stalls selling traditional goodies such as welsh cakes, brandy snaps and toffee apples.

The funfair itself consists of 30 main rides, together with some 15 children's rides and approximately 50 hoopla and side stalls.

The annual event, which dates back to the charter of King John, is now almost 800 years old - the last 600 years of which have been spent on St Matthew's Field in the town.

A spokesperson for the team at Sedgemoor District Council said: "We work hard to provide the traditional markets visitors enjoy alongside the Showman's Guild rides and stalls.

"We are making a special appeal to all visitors this year to bin their litter so we can ensure a litter-free field and nearby streets.

"Residents and visitors to the area are also reminded that West Street and adjacent roads will be closed until 10am on Sunday."

As in previous years limited parking is available with the Rotary Club of Bridgwater in the Fairfield at a cost of £3 per vehicle.

Opening and closing times for the Fair, managed by the Showman's Guild, are 11am to 11pm on Saturday.
