THIS is the moment a car was spotted driving the wrong way down the fast lane of the M5 before crashing into several vehicles before coming to a stop.

The incident happened at 6.15pm yesterday evening, when a man, believed to be in his 70s, drove in a northbound direction in the third lane of the southbound carriageway between junction 24 and junction 25.

Now, this footage, caught from the dashcam of motorist Sally Clarey, has emerged showing the incident from a motorist's viewpoint.

The M5 was closed for several hours following the incident.

The car crashed into eight vehicles before stopping.

A man in his 70s was driving the car, and suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

The southbound carriageway was closed for a number of hours following the crash, and two lanes remain closed.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The southbound carriageway of the M5 is closed between junctions 24 and 25 while we deal with an incident.

"At just after 6.15pm today we received multiple 999 calls about a vehicle travelling the wrong way (northbound) in lane three of the M5 southbound.

"Officers were on the scene within 10 minutes.

"The vehicle was in collision with several other vehicles but thankfully the driver, a man in his seventies, suffered only minor injuries.

"No one else was seriously hurt either.

"The man's been taken to hospital as a precaution and we're now working with Highways England to clear the scene of debris.

"The northbound carriageway is unaffected.

"We'd like to thank all those who called in to report the incident - due to the volume of calls we weren't able to answer the calls as quickly as normal.

"We appreciate the public's patience while we work to get the southbound carriageway running again."

All lanes were re-opened at around 9.30pm.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Three appliances from Bridgwater were mobilised to reports of an RTC persons on the M5 between J24 and J25 at 6.42pm.

"On arrival crews discovered an eight vehicle RTC with multiple injuries.

"Crews assisted the Police and the Ambulance services to make the area and vehicles safe."
