IT was a busy Bank Holiday weekend for Burnham RNLI, Burnham Air Rescue Boat (BARB) and the Coastguard with a number of call outs for the crews.

On Friday night, BARB joined Burnham and Weston Coastguards to help rescue five people who were stuck waist-deep in the mud at Weston.

The crew initially helped to rescue three people and then spotted a further two people out in the mud.

As the tide was coming in the crew flew the hovercraft to check on these two people and found them to be safe.

Then on Sunday the Coastguard team were back out to Weston, along with the Weston RNLI, this time to help a young water-skiier who was thought to have suffered back injuries after a high speed fall.

The RNLI crew spotted the girl and went to assist, helping her with a neck brace and preparing a spinal board.

She was thought to have been travelling at around 47mph when she lost control and crashed into the water.

The Coastguard Helicopter arrived and the paramedic helped to secure her on the spinal board, and she was taken by land ambulance to hospital in Bristol.

Weston-Super-Mare RNLI Helmsman Mike Buckland said “This is a terrible accident, but because of the training our crews get, we gave this young lady the best chance of making a full recovery. I would like to thank the jet skiers in Knightstone Harbour who got our crew to the lifeboat and played a part in making sure this casualty made it safely to hospital.”

On Bank Holiday Monday BARB's crews were called out to conduct a search for a missing person in the centre of Brean, alongside Police and Coastguards from Burnham and Weston.

A full search of the area was carried out and the man, an 84-year-old, was located safe and well.
