A CHILD has been airlifted to hospital with "serious" injuries and four others were injured in a two-car crash on the M5.

Emergency services rushed to the scene between Junction 21 and Junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea at around 10.45am on Monday.

One child has been airlifted to Bristol Children's Hospital with serious injuries following the incident.

Speaking today (Tuesday, August 30) Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the boy was still in hospital in a 'serious but stable condition'.

One other person was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary Hospital by land ambulance, and it is not yet known the severity of their injuries.

Three other people were treated at the scene by paramedics following the crash.

Authorities originally closed the M5 in both directions, leading to lengthy traffic queues.

There were five fire engines at the scene.

The Southbound side of the motorway was closed for around five hours, reopening shortly before 4pm.

Motorists resorted to getting out of their cars in the queues, which has also led to problems on the northbound carriageway.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: "We received the call at 10.45am to reports of five patients after a two-car crash.

"There were three walking wounded who were all treated on scene.

"One person was taken by land ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary.

"A child was also airlifted to Britol Children's Hospital in a serious condition.

"We sent three crews, one officer, Great Western Air Ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, and our Hazardous Response Team."
