AN Ilminster man became one of the oldest people to pick up their A-level results last week at the age of 75.

Stuart Shepherd has been one of the governors at Wadham School in Crewkerne for the past 20 years, he has been chairman for 10 years, and is an Ilminster town councillor.

He got a C in his A-level in history.

Cllr Shepherd said: “When I retired I decided that I wanted to keep my brain active, and consequently I used my influence to join the sixth form at Wadham for the last two years. I was part of a group doing A level history, and was accepted by the students as one of them.

“It was hard work for two reasons. First, the last time I wrote an essay was in 1957, and secondly, my handwriting has deteriorated over the years, and I was concerned that I had to get my writing improved for the exam.” which is all about essays.”

Cllr Shepherd isn’t finished there, as he hopes to take an A Level in government and politics next year.

He added: “I was just treated like one of the students and I really enjoyed it. On results day, I was as nervous as everyone else.

“It was good for me as the chairman of governors to see how the school works and getting to know the school.”
