TWO pensioners were cut out of their car and taken to hospital after a head-on crash in Taunton.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at the B3170 Staple Hill Junction near Taunton at 4.30pm yesterday.

One fire appliance from Taunton and one from Ilminster attended the incident, and on arrival, crews confirmed a two car head-on collision.

Two people, who were elderly, were trapped inside one car.

The road was closed for around two hours after the crash, reopening at 6.30pm.

Crews used cutting equipment to remove the door and the roof of the vehicle to gain access to the passengers. Firefighters gave first aid and oxygen to the casualties, before paramedics arrived.

The two pensioners suffered chest injuries, and one other casualty suffered a broken arm.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.19pm to the area of Neroche Road after a two vehicle road traffic collision.

"Two people were trapped initially in one car.

"We took two elderly patients to Musgrove Park Hospital with chest injuries.

"One patient was treated at the scene by paramedics for a wrist injury, before making their own way to hospital.

"There is no indication of how serious the injuries are."

It was initially feared the two pensioners had suffered serious injuries, but this was later downgraded.

A spokesman for the police said: "We were called to a two vehicle road traffic collision.

"There were reports of three people injured.

"One man suffered a suspected broken arm.

"Two people in the vehicle were freed by the fire service, and both were complaining of chest injuries.

"They were then taken to Musgrove Park Hospital for further treatment.

"It was later confirmed that the injuries were not life-threatening, or life-changing."
