A CHARITY selling low-priced furniture and electrical items to people in need can keep its operation on the road thanks to a £16,000 grant.

The Home Furniture Services Trust (Furnitrust) has bought a second-hand van and updated its IT system with the cash from Taunton Deane Borough Council's Housing Revenue Account Community Development Fund.

Furnitrust helps people in need and contributes to the re-use of goods in the district.

It receives donations of furniture and electrical items to sell in its store to people in need or on low incomes.

It carries out collections and deliveries when required.

Tony Kyle, Furnitrust trustee director, said: “For 20 years, the charity has benefited in many ways from the support of Taunton Deane Borough Council.

"This year we're extremely grateful for the grant to update our very aged van, which is an essential part of our operation and this assistance has helped to secure our future activity.

“We are non-profit making. All our income goes to operate our store at the Old Library, Priorswood, run the van and pay a small staff. We also work with volunteers and are always open to offers of help.”

Cllr Jane Warmington, executive councillor for community leadership, said: “Grants like these are designed to help local charities so they can go about their business of supporting people in need in Taunton Deane.

"It is wonderful that this money has given Furnitrust the chance to replace a vehicle that is vital to their operation, and we are very grateful for their kind recognition.”
