SEVERAL incidents of telephone scams and fraud have come to light in Bridgwater and West Somerset area.

At least two incidents of fraud have taken place in Stogursey and Stogumber, and police believe there may be further victims that might not have contacted them.

Victims have received phone calls from people claiming to be Metropolitan Police Officers from the Fraud Squad.

During the call they advise the victim there is a problem with their account and request that they withdraw cash, which they will come to pick up.

One elderly woman was subsequently visited by two men posing as officers in uniform.

They have then taken a significant amount of cash from the 93 year-old victim.

A similar incident also took place in Stogumber.

Another elderly victim received a phone call from a man claiming to be from New Scotland Yard.

The man asked the victim - also in her nineties - if she had made a transaction for a large sum of money in South London.

When asked questions about the claims, the caller hung up.

Chief Inspector Lisa Simpson, local policing commander for Somerset West, said: "Fraudsters will use a host of tactics to try to con people out of money.

"It is particularly disgraceful when they prey on the elderly and the vulnerable.

"These officers did not show the victims any identification. If someone is claiming to be a police officer, ask for their collar number and call 101 to confirm their ID. If they refuse to give it to you, shut the door and call 999.

"A police officer, or any other official, will never ask for money or bank details over the phone or on the door-step. If you are unsure if the person is who they say they are, ask for ID and check the information with the organisation they say they work for.

"However never use a number they give you. Always look it up yourself. In short, if you are unsure, again shut the door.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident in Stogursey. T he men were in the village on the August 2 at around 9pm.

According to the victim there were two men, one white male and one black, both wearing police uniform.

C/Insp Lisa Simpson added: "If you saw these men in the area, or have been approached by them please get in touch. You can call us on 101 quoting the reference number 5216171376.

"Similarly if you believe you have been contacted by a fraudster, please report it either by calling Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or by calling us on the 101 number."

Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They will never ask for your name or trace your call and you could earn yourself a cash reward.
