AN ELDERLY female has been hospitalised with spinal injuries after her car left the road and ploughed into signs and a hedge.

The woman was trapped in the car with injuries following the serious crash yesterday afternoon, before being freed and taken to Musgrove Hospital.

Police, ambulance and fire services were all called to the crash on A303 near South Petherton at around 4.30pm on July 31.

Fire crews from Chard and Taunton were sent to the scene and on arrival found one person "medically trapped", meaning they could not be moved because of their injuries.

Crews released the casualty from the vehicle using small tools and hydraulic cutting equipment.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said that the crash involved one vehicle which had left the road and gone into a hedge. There was also damage to some signs.

There was one person reported as walking wounded, as well as someone trapped in the car.

A spokesman for South Western Amublance Service said they were called to the crash and reported one female casualty with spinal injuries who was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital.

The road was closed westbound while the vehicle was recovered, and was reopened again shortly before 7pm.

The current condition of the female is not known.
