THE village of Puriton entered a competition organised by the Royal Bath and West of England Society.
The Puriton Allotment Association were in competition with various community organisations from Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Gloucestershire.
The idea was to find a project which had been produced to benefit an area and been achieved in a sustainable manner.
The committee received a letter to say the allotment site was being inspected by three judges and a photographer.
Committee member, Mike Parker said: "We were later informed that we were on the shortlist of five for a prize of £1,000.
"Two committee members were invited to the ceremony to hear who had been successful.
"Although we did not win it was a remarkable achievement to be in the top five.
"Praise must go to the original committee as well as the present members and plot holders for making the site what it is today in the course of five years.
"This has been achieved by many hours of work sometimes behind the scenes."
The committee would like to express their thanks to a local farmer who owns the site and has always been helpful.
