A BRIDGWATER powerlifter has flexed her muscles to be named as both a world and European record-holder.

Emma Lane, 34, who works as a safety and environmental advisor at EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point B power station, has just returned from the GPC Powerlifting European Championships in Finland with a tally of accolades.

Her haul included two medals, a plaque, two trophies and three record-breaking achievement certificates.

Emma went into the championships as the u56kg European champion and with a third place world championship achievement under her belt.

In Finland, she competed in the u60kg category and blasted her way to victory in the full power meet, breaking the European record in the squat at 156kg in the process.

She also finished first overall across the female lifters section based on bodyweight, age and total lifted on the day.

Emma said: "I was tired but thought I would go for it.

"I’m glad I did as I broke the European record and world record by deadlifting 176kg.

"I also came second in the overall female deadlifts - again based on body weight, age and total lifted."

Emma also holds the UK squat record in both the u56kg and the u60kg classes at 142.5kg and 156kg.

Peter Evans, Hinkley Point B station director, said: "It takes immense dedication and commitment to become a European champion, let alone a world record-holder.

"Emma works extremely hard and follows a tough training regime.

"I am proud she is a member of the team here at Hinkley Point B and I would like to congratulate her on her outstanding achievements."

Emma only took up the sport four years ago.

She said: "My husband, Daniel, was the person who got me into weight training and I wouldn't be where I am now without his support - he is my number one training partner.

"He also competes at the same level and does very well himself.

"We are both part of a UK powerlifting team called Darkside Barbell based in High Wycombe and we train with the team and our coach at least once a month."

Despite her world-beating performance and membership of Team GB at international events, an Olympic medal is not currently on the cards,

"A lot of people ask me if I will be at Rio but unfortunately powerlifting is not a recognised sport in the Olympics - yet," Emma added.

"If it was, I would be there like a shot."

Emma also writes her own nutritional plans to ensure she eats exactly the right balance of protein, good fats and carbohydrates each day and is sponsored by Gym Geek Pro who provide her gym wear.
