I love the English language even if it can be a bit confusing at times. I wonder who it was who came up with the idea of the words plough, trough, through and though given the different ways they are said. Maybe it just dates back to different areas and accents. I realise I could probably find the answers on the internet but I also quite like the mystery of not knowing. Having said all that, there are one or two things that I just don’t get. For example, the phrase “under the weather” is often used to describe someone who is feeling unwell but why do we say it? Surely all of us at all times are under the weather, unless of course we are referring to Tim Peake who was, until recently, above the weather.

It’s that time of year again where students from across the area are on work experience and here at Sedgemoor FM we have the company of Tom all this week. Hopefully Tom will benefit from his time with us even if the only thing he learns is that virtually all radio presenters are powered by coffee although I’m hoping he will learn far more and leave us with a much better understanding of how the world of radio works.

Finally, the answer to last week’s teaser: The annual Bridgwater Flower Show returns in August to the Town Hall but when was the first one? The answer was August 1892. This week’s teaser is this: Approximately how many people lived in Bridgwater at the time of the Domesday Book? No cheating, I’ll give you the answer in next week’s column. Have a great week.
