BUDDING cricketers in West Somerset will be inspired by the former Somerset Cricketer and South African International, Alfonso Thomas, who will be presenting prizes at the Primary Schools Cricket Tournament at West Somerset Leisure Centre in Minehead on June 17.

The tournament is a joint enterprise between 1610 which manages the centre and Minehead Cricket Club to encourage more youngsters to get involved in the sport of cricket and to have fun with friends.

The tournament is a Pairs Kwik Cricket tournament involving teams of six for the Primary schools age group and some of the proceeds from the event will go towards the mental health charity, Mind, the 1610 Charity of the Year.

Minehead Cricket Club and 1610 have been working in partnership to develop the sport in the area. Minehead Cricket Club have recently funded training for 1610 Senior Activity Leader at West Somerset Leisure Centre, Connor Williams to qualify as a Level 2 Cricket Coach. Connor was mentored by Minehead Cricket Club Dan Bowditch and completed many voluntary cricket coaching hours to qualify for the role.

Stuart Tudball a leading member of Minehead Cricket Club said: “It is important to invest in cricket at grass roots level to help develop the sport and encourage local talent.”

The tournament is due to start at 4.30pm on Friday, June 17 and the cost is £20 per team, which includes a £5 donation toward Mind.

Some funding towards team entry fees is available from Minehead Cricket Club and refreshments will be available in aid of Mind.

Certificates are available for all attendees and medals for winners and runners up.
