AROUND 15 mobile homes have moved onto the field of St Augustine School in Taunton.

The families moved onto the Priorswood Road site of The St Augustine of Canterbury School, which closed down in 2010, earlier this evening.

As well as the mobile homes, a number of vehicles have moved onto the site, and some horses have been seen grazing the field.

When the school closed in July 2010 it had 264 students, which merged into The Taunton Academy.

At the time of closing, the specialist science college had the lowest GCSE results in Somerset and the eighth lowest in England.

A spokesperson for Somerset County Council said: “We are aware of a number of travellers currently located on Council owned property at the site of the former Saint Augustine’s school in Taunton.

"We have been investigating the matter this morning and will have officers on site shortly looking in to the situation before coming to a decision if any action needs to be taken.”

One nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I opened my window last night and saw that there were about 15 vehicles that had moved on to the field.

"As well as the vehicles, there were horses, chickens and dogs barking.

"It's quite a worry really, we've never seen people move on to the field and the fact that they make food for children's school dinners next to the site is also quite concerning.

"There was a massive disruption on the road when they moved in, hopefully the council will be able to sort it out sooner rather than later."
