A HEROIC Second World War veteran from Bridgwater has received one of the most prestigious military honours for his efforts for his country.
Albert Thompson, 95, was presented The National Order of the Legion of Honour by Madame of Josette Lebrat Honary on behalf of French president Francois Hollande.
The honour has been made in recognition of the part played by Albert in the military engagement and steadfast involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War.
Albert joined the army in 1941 at Portsmouth and became a soldier with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps when he landed on Gold beach on the shores of Normandy in June 1944, having transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
The National Order of the Legion of Honour was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 it is an honour of the very highest order and can be awarded to both civil and military personnel.
