STUDENTS at Haygrove School are being encouraged to develop a growth mind-set via a series of initiatives that will be launched at the school this year.

To kick start the process, every pupil was asked to complete a short questionnaire to establish their current growth mind-set score.

During morning assemblies, each year groups’ results were revealed and assistant head teacher, Miss Jaimie Elkerton, explained more about the idea.

Using videos and quotes from famous people, the presentation showed students how mistakes can lead to improvement and how your intelligence develops each time you learn something new.

Miss Elkerton said: "We have found that students often believe that intelligence is something that can’t be changed and that making mistakes shows a lack of intelligence.

"Our aim is to show our students that this simply isn’t true.

"We believe that everyone is born with the ability to learn and that effort, grit and resilience are what brings success, not natural talent."

Every Haygrove student is being given a cue card to help them change their thinking about how they learn.

Student Ellena Criddle said: "The cue card is useful because if you feel negative you can use it to feel more positive about what’s happening.

"For example, instead of thinking something is too hard and I’ll never be able to do it, I say to myself that it will be fine, but it might just take a bit more time and effort to work it out."
