AN explorer whose death on a solo Antarctic expedition last month made national headlines is to be remembered at Taunton School.

Henry Worsley had been due to give a lecture at the school on March 8 about his remarkable life and adventures.

Tragically, that life was cut short as he attempted to become the first person to walk across Antarctica unaided.

TS History teacher Mr Robert Gallimore, a close friend of the explorer, will now be remembering this “Great Briton” in a special memorial lecture.

Mr Gallimore said: “Henry was a truly incredible man.

“What he achieved on his expeditions was awe inspiring and what he endured barely imaginable.

“But it was all worn in such a matter of fact manner that was unassuming and utterly selfless.

“He would rather enthuse on the needlework he taught the prisoners at Wormwood Scrubs than revel in the glories of his exploits as an explorer or SAS Officer.”

Admission to the lecture – also on March 8 – is free.

However, those attending are asked to make a donation to Mr Worsley’s chosen charity, the Endeavour Fund, which helps injured servicemen.
