THE clock is ticking for bookings on a high spec “Welcome Host” training course in West Somerset aimed at businesses wanting to attract more overseas visitors.

Visit England is working with South West destinations, including West Somerset and Exmoor, to deliver overseas campaigns worth £5 million. These will target French, German, Dutch, US and other markets. The number of overseas visitors is increasing, so this course is the ideal opportunity tourism businesses to communicate more effectively with them.

Cllr Karen Mills, lead member for economic regeneration and tourism at West Somerset Council, said the course was a fantastic chance for local businesses to get top-notch training and advice.

“Tourism is hugely important to our local economy so I would strongly recommend businesses to take this opportunity to learn how to improve their offer for overseas visitors. As an ex-hotelier I realise the importance of taking advantage of any opportunity to get ahead in the market, this training could potentially open up new customers and opportunities for the local businesses, and all for a considerably reduced rate, ” she said.

The cost is fixed at just £10 plus VAT per delegate – this is heavily subsidised as the usual cost would be £95+VAT a head. The event is taking place on Wednesday February 24 at The Sanctuary in Watchet.

The training is targeted at tourism / hospitality businesses, covering B&Bs, hotels, cafes, pubs, restaurants, and businesses which primarily serve the visitor market.

Welcome International helps participants to communicate successfully and provide exceptional customer service to international visitors and UK residents from different ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The course will cover:
•    the international tourism industry
•    how to communicate effectively
•    how to greet visitors in their own language
•    identify cultural expectations
