Do any of your readers remember the Westward Television Exhibition Train?

In February and March 1961, a special train visited towns across the West Country to advertise the launch of Westward Television. The train visited Bridgwater around 3 March 1961.

Attractions included a cinema inside one of the carriages, and a tiny television studio in another. British Rail ran special charter services from outlying stations, and schools organised trips to see the train. It was estimated that almost 200,000 people visited the Exhibition Train. This was thought to be the largest public event in the Westcountry since the Coronation.

I am researching the journey made by the train. If any of your readers would be willing to share their memories or photographs, they can write to me at the Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway University of London, Egham TW20 0EX – or email nick.hall@rhul.ac.uk.
