When a cold spell happens we tend to slip on a woolly-pully or more formally a woollen jumper.

Little do we think that wool was once a lucrative trade in the county with umpteen pubs named after our cloven footed friends the sheep. In medieval Bridgwater and district there were regular markets where ewes and rams were bought and sold as the woollen industry boomed.

Up on the Mendips at Priddy there's been the sheep fair held for centuries while down in towns like Highbridge, Axbridge and Bridgwater the shepherds would hear their flocks along the droves.

And after the purchase or a few head of sheep there was nothing better to have a pint of cider to celebrate the exchange in one of the pubs. And there lies part of our story: the pubs named after the sheep industry. From the Golden Fleece to the Leg of Mutton taverns have always taken the names of the local trades for their titles to attract those in the business to sup there.

Jane Penfold's pub odyssey has reached the letter S of local hostelries. We've followed her quest for information about the pubs of the area from the Cobblestones in Eastover to the Mariners Arms in Northgate. And now she's after dates, tenants and histories of the following pubs.

There's the mystery of where the Sadler’s Arms was located she's after news Sailor’s Home in St John Street and the Sailor’s Return in West Street. The Salmon Inn on Salmon Parade and also on St John Street are two more pubs she's after news of along with the Saracens Head - and nobody knows where it was.

News of these pubs would be appreciated: The Seven Stars in Friarn Street, The Sheep Market Inn also in Friarn Street and the Ship afloat Market Street. Plus info on The Ship Aground in Eastover along with the Ship on Launch, The Ship Inn at Combwich and Shipwrights Arms in Clare Street would be appreciated.

And so back to our friends the sheep. Shepherds and mutton butchers no doubt drank at the delightfully named Shoulder of Mutton in Bridgwater and its equivalent in Westonzoyland. If anyone has any woolly ideas about these hostelries then do get in touch and we will pass the info onto Jane.

Finally to complete the great S-named pub hunt we are after news of the

Sloop, the Somerset Inn, the Sportsman, the Star, the Steam packet, the Swan and the Sun.
