Councillors, residents and representatives from the Friends of Browne’s Pond group have gathered to celebrate the final few days of work on a key scheme delivered by The Bridgwater Way to improve Pond in Bridgwater.

Local residents and commuters will very soon be able to use the 3m wide path suitable for shared use, upgraded lighting that will make the path safer at night and the installation of fencing between the path and the on the west of the path to safety.

The works, which have been on-going for eight weeks, follow lengthy consultation undertaken with local residents and commuters and address key concerns such as safety, visibility and usage.

Also taking place is the reconstruction of the wall at the north end of the path to widen the link over the canal bridge to make the path easier to gain access to and enjoy.

The completion of this scheme will link to other sections such as the canal; onwards to the town centre and the railway station; back into Hamp; and, ultimately onwards to Stockmoor. Works are set to be complete before the end of November say the council.

Also recently completed are The Bridgwater Way works at King George Avenue. ; The community-led design project and includes redesign of the roundabout junction of King George Avenue and Parkstone Avenue using block paving, coloured road surfacing and planting to make it a more attractive area for local residents, reduce traffic speeds and to encourage walking and cycling.

Councillor David Fothergill, Member for Highways and Transport said: “It is fantastic to see another great scheme delivered by The Bridgwater Way project.

“What is particularly significant about these two schemes is that they were designed with a great deal of input from local residents and community groups.

“This is a good example of partnership and community working and has succeeded in delivering visually stunning schemes which will benefit the communities for years to come.”

The Bridgwater Way project aims to transform travel in the town. The project is funded by the Department for Transport and has been delivered through a partnership of Somerset County Council, Sustrans and Sedgemoor District Council.
