STUDENTS at West Somerset College paid their respects to those who lost their lives defending their country, marking remembrance day with two assemblies attended by all staff and students on Wednesday, November 11.

The assemblies included a minute’s silence, with readings and music from members of staff and students.

During the assembly one of the readings was given by Joanna Duncuff-Hoad who is now Year 9 Student Support Leader but previous served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

After listening to the last post and observing a minute’s silence head boy Dan Ross and head girl Georgie Fahey laid a wreath to remember the fallen service men and women.

They were accompanied by Mr Roddy Carlin, standard-bearer of the Minehead Branch of The Royal British Legion, whose own children attended the College.

Mr Carlin complimented the students of West Somerset, whose behaviour and attitude were, without exception, impeccable.

“You don’t get behaviour and organisation like this from adults. These young people are wonderful and a credit to the College," he said.

Robin Wichard, assistant principal and organiser of the assemblies commented; “Our history is marked by war and conflict and it is right that we should teach children to remember those who gave their lives to protect our rights and freedoms. As it says on the Kohima monument 'For your tomorrow we gave our today'.”

Head boy Dan Ross said that students had shown a great deal of respect during the service and confirmed that the students of West Somerset College see this as a key annual assembly which will continue long into the future.
