FORMER Mayor the Rev Adrian Prior-Sankey is taking over as town centre chaplain in Taunton.

He replaces the first incumbent in the post, the Rev Steven Reed, who has stepped down after two years.

Mr Prior-Sankey, who is also the co-ordinator of Taunton Street Pastors and marketing director of Taunton Flower Show, said he was delighted to take on the role as the team chaplaincy looks to expand.

He added: "It will be a privilege to work with the talented team of volunteers who deliver a professional and sensitive service to so many people.

"Steve’s ministry will be a hard act to follow, but we serve the same Master and as a long-standing friend I am grateful that he will still be around to offer wise counsel."

Taunton Team Chaplaincy - motto 'the church which has left the building' - supports staff at a number of companies, including Sainsbury's, Asda, County Hall and the UK Hydrographic Office with lay chaplains from various churches.

Mr Reed, who will continue his part-time chaplaincy role at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital and with local military units.

Chairman of trustees Andrew Hall said: "These two years have seen much change within Taunton Team Chaplaincy, including the establishment of an office in the prestigious Market House, an increased profile among both civic and business leaders, the growth of the team and daily patrols of chaplains.

"We are very grateful for the capable work which Steven has performed and look forward to the continued development of the ministry under Adrian’s leadership."

Mr Prior-Sankey will be officially welcomed by the Archdeacon of Taunton, the Ven John Reed, during the annual Business Carol Service, at St James’ Church, Taunton, on Tuesday, December 15, at 6.15pm.
