TWO men were involved in high altitude drama in Burnham this weekend 25 years ago.

Simon Wix, 28, had to make an emergency landing during a flight test after the engine failed 800ft into the air.

It was 75 minutes into Simon's flying final test with instructor Peter Williams when the engine failed to return after a simulated engine failure.

To land the plane, they had to manoeuvre through obstacles including 30,000 volt power cables, telephone lines, trees and hedges but managed to escape unhurt after landing at Brinsey Farm near Weston-super-Mare.

THE 200th locomotive move for Mike Lawrence low-loaders of Highbridge was celebrated in style with the transport of a steam engine built in 1896.

THE Ritz Cinema in Burnham welcomed viewers back to the big screen with a bang, re-opening with a new look following refurbishment work.

A FORMER member of the French Navy, laid the wreath to mark Remembrance Sunday in Burnham.

Roland Rigaud, a member of the twinning party from Cassis in his eighties, laid the wreath at a ceremony at Burnham War Memorial Hospital.

November 10, 1995

A MAJOR local landmark, the Burnham Esplanade Pavilion, was sold into private ownership for the first time in recent history.

Well-known amusement caterer Harry Parkin purchased the Pavilion which had previously been leased by Sedgemoor District Council with a pledge that it will serve tourism in the town.

LONG-SERVING management committee member of Burnham and Highbridge Sea Cadets Unit TS Dulverton Winne Meek received official recognition of her 25 years of volunteer work.

AMATEURS and experts gathered at King Alfred School hall for the 59th Highbridge Chrysanthemum Society Show, drawing 420 entries.
