The judges observed, made their notes and marked their cards. At around midnight last night the news came through that it was the Gremlins Carnival Club that had picked up the most awards for their stunning Lights, Camera, Action entry.

It was their take on the silver screen movies of the golden age of Hollywood that most impressed the judges as they scooped the best featured local cart class, the cup for the best decorated generator, plus the much vaunted Stan Bown Cup for lighting. Add to that the Championship Cup and it’s fair to say it was a good night for the Gremlins Carnival Cup.

But there were other spoils to share with Pentathlon, Huckyduck, the Harlequins, the Marketeers, Newmarket, Marina Sydenham, Eclipse and Lime Kiln all bagging silverware for their display cases.

The masqueraders also captured the eyes of the judges with the Xtreme Carnival Club picking up first in the adult large group section with Salute, with the Vagabonds in second and the Bridgwater Belles Dance and Carnival Team bagging third spot.

In the junior group section of masqueraders it was a clear win for Rhythm Fever and Under the Sea, while the Chameleon Batonettes and Arabian Nights were second just in front of Somerset Sapphire Majorettes and Samba Brazil.

Other masqueraders picking up top spot in their groups were Smandy’s Carnival Club, Samvantra Juniors, A & ACC as I Robot and Carina Haines and her Czarevna’s Glacial Odyssey. Well done to them all and well done to the many masqueraders who took part in what is a demanding night of walking and performing.

Highlights of the evening also included Lime Kiln’s take on Showboat with some dapper plaid themed costumes and hundreds of electric light bulbs, while runners up to the Gremlins in the local cart entry was Noah by the Marketeers with The Ramblers in third with the spooky Gangs of Gotham City.

Tableau was a hotly contested class with Pentathlon grabbing top spot in the open section with What Lies Beneath and Wills Carnival Club winning out in the local cart section. There were cheers for the chilly entry by Gemini with Scott’s Terra Nova featuring the ill-fated expedition to the South Pole and Huckyduck with their F Scott Fitzgerald themed Gatsby entre.

The crowds loved the Wurzels inspired Oh What A Beauty entry from Newmarket while up and coming Marina Sydenham Junior Carnival Club picked up top spot in the youth sector with Marina Ahoy.

It was one of the most successful processions and evenings for the carnival helped in part by a professional marketing campaign to widen the appeal of the event and by the weather Gods who blessed the evening with dry mild weather.
