Burnham and Highbridge’s police station is set to close next year. No date has been given but the office on Burnham Road will close as part of a cuts to the Police Force.

However the constabulary say they will open another office in the town at a new location although it will be within another organisation’s building. The possible options include the fire station and the council’s offices at Jaycroft Road in Burnham.

The station is open in the week from Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm but closes for lunch. Avon and Somerset Police say the change will not affect the service in the town as the same number of officers will remain on duty.

Meanwhile a row has broken out in Bridgwater when a police officer told the town council that the force were understaffed by 50 percent. Sgt Ryan Edwards said there were at times just four officers covering the town with moral in the past at rock bottom due to low numbers of officers available.

The town’s MP Ian Liddell Grainger said the Avon and Somerset Police Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens “didn’t have a clue” as to what was going on.
