The nuclear power station that is visible from Burnham’s seafront was the scene of a heated demonstration last week.

Campaigners gathered on the road outside to draw attention to what they see as a ‘white elephant.’

They listened to speeches from the SW Green MEP Molly Scott Cato and Dennis Baupin, the vice president of French National Assembly.

The French politician questioned the safety and also the need for the power station as in France nuclear production will decrease from 75 percent of electricity to 50 percent in 2025.

Molly Scott Cato was concerned that the Chinese Communist Party would be controlling the part of the investment that the China National Nuclear Company makes nuclear weapons.

EDF said that Hinkley Point C would deliver secure and affordable low carbon electricity for the next 60 years. They said: “Nuclear is the only proven low-carbon option for providing the predictable electricity generation the UK needs. It will provide seven percent of the UK’s generation needs whilst minimising carbon output.”

The energy firm said the project was providing thousands of jobs locally and creating new infrastructure for Somerset. Hinkley C was safe and secure they said.
