YOU can get tips on the best plants to attract bees during a National Honey Week event at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, Monkton Heathfield, from October 25 to 31.

Store manager Andrew Pitman said: "We thought it would be a great idea to get involved with The British Beekeepers Association’s National Honey Week so we can help spread awareness of the importance of bees and the value of their by-products.

“During the week we will have lots of perfect pollinators on display for people to pick up.

"Plants available range from lavender, buddleia, pyracantha and rosemary and our expert staff will be on-hand to help people pick plants for their garden and offer advice on caring for them.”

The British Beekeepers Association dedicates the Honey Week to celebrating the honey harvest and recognising the importance of the honey bee.

Andrew added: “Our Elm Tree restaurant will be serving a honey-themed menu throughout the week with dishes celebrating honey, including parsnip, rosemary and honey soup and chargrilled honey and grain mustard chicken breast.

“People can also purchase a cider and honey pork casserole and we will have honey roast gammon on the menu on October 28.

"They’ll also be tempted with our honey flapjacks or our delicious freshly made pancakes with honey and lemon drizzle or, as a healthier alternative, they can sample honey in their hot drinks.

“The week coincides with the end of the beekeeping season and the honey harvest. Our Plant Advisor, Fiona Smart, is a beekeeper and will be on-site supplying honey for our customers.

“We hope lots of people come along to learn more about honey, its uses and the gardeners’ best friend, the bee.”
