TWO kite surfers were rescued by Weston's RNLI volunteer crew this morning after the lack of wind made their kites unusable.

The crew were paged to the incident on the north side of Brean Down just before 11am when a member of the public saw the two surfers apparently having difficulties.

Both boats were launched within minutes and raced to investigate.

They found two surfers in the water with their kites unusable due to a lack of wind.

The surfers had decided to try to swim to the beach at Uphill but the strong tides were making it difficult.

Although one of the casualties was in reasonably good condition, the other was getting cold and becoming exhausted.

The D Class lifeboat Anna Stock took the surfers and their equipment on board and carried them to the beach.

They were handed over to the coastguard who assessed them to see if they needed medical assistance.

Both boats then returned to the station to await the next call.

Nigel Congram, helmsman of the Anna Stock, said: "For us this was a simple call but for the two in the water it could have been very different.

"The tides in the Bristol Channel in general, and Weston Bay in particular, are very strong and difficult to swim against.

"A least one of these surfers was unlikely to make it to land if we had not been there."
