“DON’T sit back and criticise – get up and do something to help promote and expand trading facilities to make for a more prosperous town.”

That is the public plea by Mike Allen, chairman of Burnham Traders’ Association, in answer to critics of the recent Victorian Week.

His blunt message is aimed at High Street traders who enjoy summer flowering baskets and pre-Christmas lighting which results in tinkling tills, but who pay nothing towards the effort.

SEDGEMOOR planners face a dilemma after refusing permission for DIY timber and builders merchants Jewsons to move to Isleport industrial estate on noise nuisance.

Now the company has re-submitted its application layout, to the consideration of nearby residents, throwing the whole issue back into the melting pot.

SEPTEMBER 22, 1995

ANOTHER important Burnham public building faced an uncertain future, in the wake of a cash crisis.

Days after Sedgemoor District Council decided to “market test” the possible sale or lease of the former Burnham and Highbridge Town Council headquarters at the Manor House, trustees of the old Adult School in Adam Street, once Burnham library, say it may have to be sold, and the town centre site possibly redeveloped.

AN APRIL deadline was set for council chiefs to save the area’s threatened Harvest Homes after agreeing to adopt stricter regulations for marquees.

The decision to review how other district councils were tackling new rules was reached after councillors heard of widespread opposition to the tighter fire regulations. Marquee firms contacted the Weekly News and tried to allay panic setting in about the safety of marquees.

POLICE were hunting two men who made off with a haul of jewellery from the Maddocks Slade home of an 83-year-old woman.

The raiders took a gold engagement ring set with three diamonds, a wedding ring, and a 16 inch gold chain necklace.

A neighbour saw two men leave the house, and head towards Berrow Road, and police wanted to hear from anyone else who may have seen them in the area.

POLICE bosses from the Avon and Somerset area visited London on Monday to hear some of Charles Clarke’s views on the future of law enforcement.

The Home Secretary gave an outline to all the country’s authorities on how he thought some forces needed to improve their protective services and how they would deliver neighbourhood policing.

A HALF marathon is set to return to Burnham after a long-running break of 10 years.

Already nearly 350 competitors have signed up to take part on October 2, which sees a 13.1-mile route wind round Brent Knoll, East Brent, Lympsham, and Berrow after starting at the BASC ground.

FUN-LOVING staff at a Burnham store went sports mad last week as part of a new initiative to help schools in our area.
