WELLINGTON is gearing up for another spectacular start to the Carnival season this weekend as the South Somerset District Circuit kicks off.

Thousands are set to line the town's streets for the evening festivities, which start at Rockwell Green at 7.30pm on Saturday.

There are 60 entries this year, including a new float for the Carnival Queens and a procession of vintage buses, which will home the Wellington Street Bad.

Taking part as a walking entry is brave little James Gannicliss, who despite breaking his leg, will be joining in on Saturday in true carnival spirit.

There is also a carnival entry from Torres Vedras, Wellington's twinned town in Portugal.

Dave Rylatt, chairperson of Wellington Carnival said preparations were going well for this year.

He added: "It's a lot of work but always worth it.

"Once we have finished the South Somerset Circuit we move on to helping the bigger circuit.

"England are playing Wales in the Rugby World Cup on Saturday,we did consider having a float up with a big screen so people could watch it.

"The town has always been great at supporting us, so we're really looking forward to it."

To coincide with the start of carnival season, Avon and Somerset Police Force is launching a “Somerset after dark…” campaign to help the public remain safe while enjoying the festivities.

Chief Inspector Sean Williams, local police commander for West Somerset, said: “Carnivals are a fantastic Somerset tradition and they are wonderful events. We want everyone to enjoy them and the variety of firework displays and Halloween festivities on offer for the next few months.

“We want everyone to have a wonderful time and so our message is simple – enjoy yourselves, but don’t risk spoiling the night for everyone else through irresponsible drinking and doing something you will no doubt regret in the morning.”
