LUCKY pupils at Parkfield Primary School were treated to a visit from a renowned jazz musician.

Mr Pete Long, musical director of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra in London, and who has performed with the likes of Jools Holland and The Stereophonics, visited the school.

He gave the children an exhilarating demonstration of a variety of brass instruments at the launch of their "Buzzing About Brass" project.

The school has recently been awarded substantial grant monies from both the EMI Music Sound Foundation and Music For All.

The money has been used to purchase a class set of 32 cornets from local brass and woodwind specialists John Packer Ltd, who also sponsored the demonstration.

Music Co-ordinator Claire Davies said:“We have a vibrant music department here at Parkfield with over one third of our school population taking instrumental lessons but uptake on brass instruments has, over time, diminished.

"We are looking to redress this balance through our exciting initiative which will allow students of all ages to experience the ‘buzz’ of playing a brass instrument.

"There will be various activities taking place throughout the school year to raise the profile of brass playing within our school.” Brass tuition will be provided by Mrs Claire Whitworth of Taunton Music Services.
