A CYCLIST is fighting for his life after being airlifted to hospital following a a crash near Bridgwater this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 8am on the A39 near junction 23 of the M5 in Dunball after a man riding a bicycle was in a collision with a car.

One male cyclist was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with very serious head injuries following the crash.

He has since been transferred to Bristol Southmead due to the severity of his injuries.

These have been described as life threatening.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist on the A39 at 8am this morning.

“The cyclist has serious head injuries, and the air ambulance was called to the scene.

“The man was initially taken to Musgrove Park Hospital but he was then transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

“It is believed the injuries are life-threatening.”

The road has been closed between Dunball Roundabout and Bridgwater North, and a diversion has been put in place by police.

Motorists are being advised not to enter the M5 motorway from junction 23 but to access it at 24 or 22.

A spokesman for Devon Air Ambulance confirmed the man had been airlifted to Musgrove Hospital

Police are also now appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 101 quoting the incident number 165.
