PLANS to create a hand car wash and valeting business on part of the Tesco car park in Chard has again been met with opposition.

A revised application has been put forward by Waves Consultancy Ltd for the change of use of nine parking spaces at the store in Tapstone Road and replaced by the car washing facilities.

A previous proposal was withdrawn by the applicants in order to get a detailed noise survey carried out which concludes that a “worstcase scenario” would see neighbouring properties receive a “marginally greater” level of noise than currently exists with supermarket trade.

But residents told members of Chard Town Council’s planning and highways committee last Monday that that was “poppycock.”

They told councillors that it would have a detrimental impact on their lives – especially with it being a seven days a week operation.

“Our gardens are raised up from the car park to create an amphitheatre and this will ruin our peace and quiet,” said one objector.

They also told councillors about their concerns about environmental issues such as surface run-off water contaminating the area.

Cllr Irene Glynn said: “I have got concerns about the acoustic report that was carried out.”

The committee agreed to object to the application – although a final decision rests with South Somerset District Council.

Waves have said that the proposed business would create four full-time and four part-time jobs for the local area. “We do not believe that there will be a material increase in noise and disturbance from the site because of the proposed use of the site as a supermarket,” Waves said .

The applicants said that the car wash operation would be an environmentally friendly operation with the installation of a working water recycling unit.
