THE Conservatives have tightened their grip on control of Sedgemoor District Council at the expense of Labour and the Liberal Democrats following the elections.
The Tories gained four seats while Labour lost three and the Liberal Democrats lost one, meaning the Tory Group has an even stronger majority than previously.
Leader of the Sedgemoor Conservative group, Cllr Duncan McGinty, said: “It’s a good result for the Conservative group. “We’ve done an awful lot of work to improve Sedgemoor over the last four years and I think the voting is an indication of the growth that people have seen and now we intend to work to continue to grow the area.
“We also want to look at raising the wage levels in the area and also continue the housing growth in order that we can accommodate those that need houses.
“Hinkley will also be a major priority and we will be working with Ian Liddell-Grainger to make sure we get things moving. We’ll be looking to head over to London once the Cabinet is in place to offer our thoughts on the best way forward.”
The Tories now occupy 35 seats on the district council with Labour holding on to 10 seats, while UKIP councillors now occupy two seats on the council for the first time.
The Lib-Dems now hold just just one seat on Sedgemoor.
Cllr Mick Lerry, Labour Group leaderCllr Mick Lerry, told the Mercury he was obviously pleased and privileged to be re-elected himself but disappointed to have lost good councillors in key wards across Sedgemoor. “I’m sorry to have lost some of the councillors that we have during this election. We’ve lost a lot of experience with Reg Winslow in Fairfax.
"However I’m very pleased to have been re-elected to be councillor for Victoria Ward for another four years.”
