THREE unsung heroes in Taunton Deane have been recognised for their tireless and selfless work in helping to make life better in the Borough.

The trio were all named as winners of the 2015 Citizenship Awards and were congratulated by Mayor of Taunton Deane Dave Durdan at a special ceremony on Friday April 24.

Nominations were made earlier this year and were whittled down to a shortlist of eight.

The winners were announced on the night in front of an audience of supporters, friends and families.

They were:

• Kay Seed – nominated for her work with the residents of Lane Estate and in acknowledgement of her 20 year commitment to shaping tenant services in Taunton Deane. She has been involved in many community activities including breaking down barriers to develop mutual understanding and respect and making a positive difference to the lives of residents on the Lane Estate.

• Mike Nicholls – nominated for his significant contribution to the running and cycling communities of Taunton Deane. For many years Mike has freely given his time, expertise and encouragement to dozens if not hundreds of would-be runners across Taunton Deane. Mike has been willing to share his knowledge and give his time. As well as supporting individuals Mike has supported events, marshalling at numerous races. Mike was a founder member of the now well established and hugely popular Running Forever Running Club which has a membership of over 200. Mike has also contributed greatly to the cycling community, in particular building confidence in nervous/ new cyclists.

• David Gill – nominated for his dedication to the Rowbarton Friendship Association and his associated fundraising efforts. David has raised £13,000 for charity. David is both President and Chairman of the Rowbarton Friendship Association. David organises a wide range of activities and holds regular fundraising events. David makes a point of visiting sick members, makes hospital visits and sends flowers and cards keeping a close check on his members’ wellbeing.

The winners were presented with certificates plus £100 to the charity of their choice: Kay chose Tearfund, Mike nominated The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation while David selected Holy Trinity Church, Taunton.

The awards and celebrations were funded by the Borough Council and local Rotary Clubs.

The other nominees were: Steve Williams – nominated for his commitment and ongoing support to the Oake and District Community Hall and Community Shop ensuring their continued provision.

Margaret Davis – nominated in recognition of her dedication to volunteering with Age UK and for her continued work with the residents of Bishops Lydeard.

Jane Hofmeister – nominated in recognition of her hard work and dedication to the Think Amy Campaign which, in 2014, became a registered charity. In addition to promoting safe driving Think Amy (and Jane) have raised in excess of £10k for Musgrove Park Hospital Children’s Ward.

Mark Peters – nominated for his dedicated work over the last 16 years serving on the Lydeard St Lawrence and Tolland Parish Council.

Beryl Beckhelling – nominated for her dedication to volunteering with a variety of organisations including St John Ambulance, the Samaritans and most recently Taunton Deane and West Somerset Credit Union.
