SOMERSET is being encouraged to mark the end of the Second World War in Europe with events of celebration and commemoration.
Friday May 8 is the 70th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), but the Government’s online map of events lacks events for Somerset.
Across the country, a two-minute silence is being held at 3pm, while beacons will be lit on high ground during the evening.
The weekend sees a range of celebrations, from a VE concert on Saturday May 9 – being broadcast by the BBC – and street parties or picnics on the Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, important landmarks or buildings are being illuminated, to remember buildings that were lit up on VE Day in 1945 Schools can find out how to get involved on the TES Connect website: www.tes.co.uk/dfe And further details and resources for local events can be found at: www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/ve-day-70th-anniversary
