Cycling for sight

A BRAVE Taunton teenager plans to cycle from Land's End to Taunton as he battles against a degenerative eye condition.

Chris Browning, 17, of Galmington, suffers from Cone Dystrophy, which affects his colour vision, and means he is sensitive to light and unable to drive.

He is taking on the cycling challenge to raise money for Gift of Sight, a Southampton-based charity that looks at finding a treatment for the presently untreatable disease.

Chris plans to cycle for four or five days in the first week of April and so far has raised £600 for the charity.

He told the County Gazette: "The training is going well, but I'm maybe not doing as much as I should be!

"Hopefully the money will go towards looking for a cure for Cone Dystrophy and Macular Degenerative Disease. I hope to help other people with this condition."

Chris will be getting support from his friend, Ian Bellringer, on the first leg of the journey, and his uncle, Graham Burgess, but he is not a stranger to cycling challenges as he has done many in the past to raise money for charities including Children in Need.

His mum, Rosemary, said: "If this helps somebody else with Chris' condition that would be great - we all take sight for granted."
