ARCHAEOLOGISTS are to explore the churchyard of St George's in Wilton, after a tomb collapsed into a hole in the ground.
Members of the church do not know how the hole came about, but some have said it could be an underground tunnel into the church.
A spokesman said: "There were no graves beneath the tomb so we don't know how long the hole has been there or why it exists.
"The area has been sealed off and work is starting to remove the tomb.
"County archaeologists will then visit the site to investigate what happened and whether there is an interesting reason behind the incident.
"Then the hole will be closed up and the tomb put back in place."
