CHAIRMAN Bob Inskip offered members a celebration of dance in music at the February meeting.

He started his programme with a piece of trivia with Lesley Garret singing I Could Have Danced All Night.

Orchestral Suite No 1, Bourree 1 and 11 and Passepied 1 and 11 by Bach followed, and then a favourite jazz guitarist and composer, Charlie Byrd. After enjoying the polonaise, members danced to Haydn’s Menuetto with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Members were then invited to enjoy Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, Buckaroo Holiday, followed by the talented Benjamin Grosvenor on the piano with 19th Century composer Schultz-Evler’s Arabesques, By The Beautiful Blue Danube.

Before the interval Bob introduced SaintSaens’ Danse Maacabre.

The second half brought members to a ballet within a show in the form of Richard Rogers’ La Princess Xenobia and, returning to jazz, Stan Getz’s Samba da Sahra.

Members were treated to Nicola Benedetti on violin playing Scott Skinner’s The Hurricane Set. Waltzes are a constant source of delight, as shown in Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes.

The evening ended with a very good arrangement of Piazzolla’s Libertango with Alison Balsam, trumpet, and Benjamin Grosvenor playing Boogie Woogie Etude, written in 1943 by Morton Gould.

In her vote of thanks, programme secretary Pamela Everitt said the evening had been a pleasure and told Bob members had enjoyed a fantastic programme.

Carol White operated the equipment.

The club meets again on March 17 at 7.30pm in the Minster Rooms when committee member Bill Butt will give a presentation.

Copies of programmes are available from club secretary Ann Hipwood on 01460-62047. Guests are always welcome and the first night is free.
