A BRIDGWATER police officer has been recognised for his outstanding work and actions after he savedawoman from jumping off a bridge.

PC Ian Long receivedaChief Constable’s Commendation after being called to help a distressed woman who was threatening to jump from the Town Bridge in January last year.

PC Long stayed calm and managed to negotiate with the woman to come down from the water’s edge and speak with him safely on the other side.

She refused to come away but spoke to PC Long, where he distracted her and managed to pull her away from the edge.

He was presented with his award at Hestercombe House near Taunton.

The High Sheriff of Somerset, Richard Lloyd, who presented the awards at the ceremony, said: “It is an honour for me to give my congratulations to the recipients of these awards; the quick-thinking, bravery and intelligence they have shown has been outstanding.”
