THE manager of Chard United has spoken of his shock following the sudden death of former striker Stephane Coombes.

The 23-year-old died suddenlyon Saturday and the club has extended its condolences to the family of their former forward.

Stephane was James Govier’s first signing as a manager in the 2009/10 season and a minute’s silence was held in his name at the weekend.

Govier said: “Everyone at Chard United is shocked and saddened by the untimely loss of former formidable striker Stephane Coombes.

“Not only has Chard United lost a great footballer, we have lost a great friend too and he will be sorely missed.

“Stephane had great natural ability and having not played for a number of years, hit close to 30 goals in his first season in men’s football.

“His pace, technical ability and courageous desire to win along with his brilliant partnership with Ricky Anderson made up one of the most feared strike forces in the division. Unfortunately, due to Stephane’s fearless approach he suffered an ankle injury which restricted his involvement in the 2010/11 season.

“Stephane’s last appearance for the club came in a pre-season friendly in July 2014 where he once again was making a return to Chard United.

“I firmly believe that without Stephane’s contribution to the club we would not have achieved the success we have had in recent years and for that I thank him, undoubtedly had Stephane been able to continue playing he would have made the jump to senior level football.

“The club would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family at this tragic time.”

United are looking to hold a memorial game in the summer in Stephane’s memory.
