Fire fighters are on the scene tackling a large fire in Chard.

One person has been taken to hospital with suspected burns. 

Emergency services have closed off East Street while the blaze near Derhams is tackled.

The incident is ongoing and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

The News has been told that nearby properties have been evacuated by police due to  gas cylinders near the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: "Two fire engines from Chard were mobilised to a call stating there was a fire in a furniture building on East Street in Chard.

"On arrival crews asked for a further 2 fire engines which were mobilised from Axminster and Crewkerne along with an incident command unit from Wiveliscombe. Crews confirmed the building was well alight and made pumps 8. Fire crews from Colyton, Yeovil, Wellington and Honiton were mobilised along with an aerial ladder platform and incident support unit from Yeovil.

"The building is 12m x 50m and used as a furniture warehouse. The building is made up of compartments and the building is 50% involved in the fire. Gas cylinders are involved in the fire , meaning that a 200metre cordon has to be put into place and nearby properties are being evacuated for their safety. Crews are using the aerial ladder platform, four safety officers, one marshalling officer, 3 ground monitors, 1 compressed air foam and 6 hose reel jets.
