In Cornwall many people spend time on one of the sandy beaches and shingle coves along the coastline.

Follow basic beach safety guidelines set out by the RNLI. It can help to keep you and those with you you out safe.

Follow these six easy steps: a Find the red and yellow flags and swim between them Look at the safety signs b Ask a lifeguard for advice c Get a friend to swim with you d Stick your hand in the air and shout for help if in difficulty e Never swim between black and white chequered flags, these indicate areas for use by craft.

Remember to always follow the advice of Lifeguards and NEVER SWIM IN AREAS WITH RED FLAGS FLYING.

In an emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Cornwall has one of the lowest crime rates in the UK but there are a number of ways to help reduce the risk of crime. Where possible, leave valuables such as large quantities of spending money, locked in your accommodation.

Do not leave valuables on display within your car, stow them under seats or in the boot, out of view. Use beach lockers where possible, or don't take valueables such as mp3 players to the beach.
