MORE than 1,000 students and staff at Chilton Trinity School are urging Somerset residents to vote for the battle famously held near their school as the theme for the new annual ‘Somerset Day’.

The students have engaged in the debate at school and have decided they want the Battle of Sedgemoor, which was held in Westonzoyland on 6th July 1685, to be remembered as the new Somerset Day.

It was the last battle fought on English soil and just a few miles away from their school.

Currently Somerset's 900,000 residents are voting in the ‘Passion for Somerset’ event for three historic dates to become ‘Somerset Day’.

The other two dates are 11th May when King Alfred gathered all the people of Somerset, and 19th May which commemorates the birth of England's most popular saint, St Dunstan.

Chilton Trinity head of history, Howard Mills, said: “This is a tremendous piece of history for this area to remember.

“We would be delighted if the final battle held on English soil would become the new Somerset Day.”
