WEST Somerset MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has approached Secretary of State Liz Truss on West Somerset Council’s decision to abandon plans to bid for funds for a flood defence at Blue Anchor to stop a hotel from falling into the sea.

The decision by West Somerset Council was announced last week due to “considerable financial risk”.

The bid was to be made to the Environment Agency for money to build the defence that would hopefully save the Blue Anchor Hotel and the road behind it, the B3191.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said: “This hotel will go into the sea if nothing is done about it and this decision is unacceptable so I have formally spoken to the Secretary of State.

“If the hotel falls into the sea it will be an absolute disaster for the entire tourism industry in the area.

People will not want to visit because they will say it is unsafe.”

West Somerset Council discussed the issue of Blue Anchor at a full council meeting last week (Wednesday December 17).
