A PLAN to build 49 homes in Puriton has attracted a string of complaints that it will bring traffic chaos.

Taylor Wimpey has submitted a revised plan to build behind Riverton Road but residents say traffic problems in and out of the village still remain.

Many have written letters of objection to Sedgemoor District Council, saying the development will result in up to 100 more vehicles passing through the village, which will cause chaos to the peaceful setting.

Many feel there will also be tailbacks on routes to the village, such as Puriton Hill, as a result.

The site, at just under than three hectares, is three fields split by hedgerows, and access is via 24 Riverton Road, which Taylor Wimpey acknowledges is one of the constraints of the scheme.

Mr and Mrs D. Brookes said in their letter to the council: “There is now, and has been for some time, a serious problem with traffic exiting Puriton from Hall Road on to the A39 in rush hour. It is a fatality waiting to happen.

“We respectfully submit that no further development, particularly of this size, should be considered in Puriton until the existing traffic situation is resolved as part of a wider traffic management plan for Puriton.”

Of the 39 letters to the council, a number say the affordable housing is much needed and have supported the plans. Puriton Parish Council clerk Bruce Poole said the council had now sent in a letter supporting the application, but has suggested various considerations, including that the access is safe and the parish council has influence on the selection process for affordable homes.

Taylor Wimpey’s architects, Pegasus, have defended the scheme as being an important opportunity for the village which will also include amenity areas and landscaping.

A spokesman said: “The scheme has been designed specifically to meet local housing need, and will provide family accommodation in a location that has access to essential shops and facilities.

“Permission for the scheme will allow an appropriate quantity of housing in a sustainable location for the benefit of local people.”

The decision will be made by Sedgemoor planners.
