BRIDGWATER-based police officers, staff and members of the public received recognition of their dedication and courage at an awards ceremony last week.

The ceremony was led by the High Sheriff of Somerset Richard Lloyd and Acting Chief Constable John Long.

Mr Lloyd said: “It’s incredible to hear the variety of the citations; the quick-thinking, hard work and bravery of officers and members of the public.”

Mr Long also presented a number of the awards.

He said: “When people are in their hour of need, it’s inspiring to know that there are people who will respond, like these officers and members of the public have done, without a moment’s thought.”

A Commendation was awarded to PC Julie Tolley who tried to resuscitate a stillborn baby at a house in Bridgwater and then provided support to the family afterwards.

Chief Supt and Crime District Commander for Somerset West, Daimon Tilley said: “Julie remained calm and professional throughout this traumatic incident.

“The family themselves were full of praise for Julie and a phone call was received from the paramedic commending Julie for her calmness and actions.”

PC Kevin Neal, also based at Bridgwater, and Bridgwater resident Barry Williams received Royal Humane Society Awards for their preventing a woman committing suicide from a bridge over the M5 in May 2013.

A second police officer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was also honoured for his part.

The two officers held her clothing when she tried to push herself off, and Mr Williams helped them to pull her back to the safe side of the railing.

PCSO Susan Marks also received an Angela Yeoman Award for her work within the Hinkley Point Policing Team, particularly her road safety work with local schools.
