TWO Ilminster cadets are celebrating after being awarded for their hard work and efforts.

Cadet Sophie Twycross of the Ilminster platoon was awarded the Denis Lucy Prize.

The award is in memory of Denis Lucy, who died in 2010 and had been an officer in the Royal Ulster Rifles.

He moved to Ilminster a number of years ago, and was a keen supporter of the Ilminster Royal British Legion branch and the Army Cadet Force.

His son William, served as an officer with the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars in the 1980s.

The aim of the prize is to present a cash prize annually so a member of the Ilminster Army Cadet Force can buy items of kit they would otherwise have to fund themselves.

Sophie won the top prize of best cadet and a £70 voucher, and Cadet Brandon Keats received an award and a £30 voucher for being the cadet who made the best effort.

Retired col Frank Gale, the Ilminster Legion Branch presidents presented both cadets with their prizes on Mr Lucy's behalf.
